Calder: Nonspace
27 October 2018–6 January 2019Hauser & Wirth, Los Angeles

Calder: Nonspace presented primarily monochromatic, abstract sculptures that create volumes out of voids. Stabiles, mobiles, and standing mobiles wove through a specially designed environment by architect Stephanie Goto conceived to reveal the sculptures’ intuitive spatial relationships. The show took its name from a 1963 essay by James Jones, written after his encounter with a group of large-scale sculptures at Calder’s studio in Saché, France.
