Calder and Abstraction: From Avant-Garde to Iconic
24 November 2013–27 July 2014Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Taking as its compass the large-scale sculpture Three Quintains, a site-specific fountain commissioned by LACMA’s Art Museum Council in 1964 for the opening of the museum’s Hancock Park campus, Calder and Abstraction: From Avant-Garde to Iconic brought together a range abstract sculptures, including mobiles, stabiles, and maquettes for larger outdoor works, that spanned more than four decades of the artist’s career. The exhibition was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry.
