Calder After the War featured works of art from the years of 1945–49, widely considered to be one of the most important periods in the artist’s career. The sculptures of this time are distinguished not only by the grace and balance of their systems but also by the intricacy, unpredictability, and interacting forces that brought them to a radical new level, as Calder merged stabile and mobile constructions and introduced sophisticated weights and cantilevers.
