Curated by Brigitte Leal and Joan Simon, Alexander Calder: les années parisiennes 1926–1933 was the first comprehensive, critical look at the formative seven-year period when Calder, on his way to becoming one of the greatest American artists, discovered his own singular vocabulary while living and working among the international avant-garde. From his complex performative artwork Cirque Calder (1926–31) to his figurative wire sculptures and first abstractions, the show offered an unprecedented insight into Calder’s radical development.
